Busitn’ Brandon Paid Version
Bustin’ Brandon: 17 Rounds is the ‘paid’ version of the game. On the Google Play Store the game is called “Bustin’ Brandon”, for $1.99 with no in-app purchases.
Bustin Brandon is a competitive, single player boxing match between you and Brandon. The game features satirical cartoon style art with easy button controls for striking, dodging and countering punches.
Go toe-to-toe with Brandon, who is also known as the “Big Guy”, for 17 rounds in a boxing match.
To succeed you must use a combination of strikes and dodges to win the match. As you progress, each round gets more brutal as you put up a good fight with Brandon.
Completing the 17 rounds leads to a grand finale to conclude the story.
The game also features sayings and quotes from Brandon, “C’mon man, fight me!” is a phrase that Brandon uses often in the game. To play “Bustin’ Brandon”, click here.

Bustin’ Brandon Development
Bustin’ Brandon and Bustin’ Brandon Lite was developed with the Twine tool in just under three months.
What is Twine?
Twine is an open-source tool for writers and game creators to create interactive stories.
Typically, writers and story tellers use this tool for creating ‘choose-your-adventure’ style stories and because ‘if’ and ‘else’ programming elements can be incorporated into Twine stories, it’s common that game creators use Twine to develop their games.
This has become popular with game creators and now, a lot of indie game developers use this tool/platform to create with.
There’s even a marketplace for Twine games called Itch.io where game creators can host their game(s). The Bustin’ Brandon demo game is also available on Itch.io, to play it there, click here.
Where Did the Bustin’ Brandon Idea Come From?
Art & Apps has been dabbling with Twine for over a year and since this tool is geared more towards adventure story games, there was a need for a combat system to create an action game, so brainstorming began!
A&A developed a combat system that was going to be used on another game called “The King’s Gambit”, which is still currently in the works.
A&A switched gears to take the combat system from proof of concept (POC) to final product by developing it for an action boxing game and from there Bustin’ Brandon was born to apply this system.
What is “The King’s Gambit”?
The King’s Gambit is a game and concept that was first inspired by the Netflix docuseries “The Queen’s Gambit”.
The King’s Gambit is a fictional story, created by Art & Apps, that takes elements from Chess – the board game, and King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table during their search for the Holy Grail.

How Does the Bustin’ Brandon Combat System Work?
In Bustin’ Brandon there are two buttons, striking and dodging.
Striking in Bustin’ Brandon
When using the Strike button, you are on the offense and starting-off Brandon has more HP (Hit Points) and has stronger punches than you.
You very well could lose to him if you only use the Strike button.
Let’s break it down though, with Twine you can program in a randomizer to select from a set of variables so in Bustin’ Brandon when you’re punching with the Strike button there are 4 different HP damage levels that are selected at random.
The different levels are: soft, two medium HP levels and a hard punch HP level.
As you progress in the game and defeat Brandon in each round, he gets a little weaker and his HP gets lower at the beginning of the rounds. Your punches get stronger and your HP level gets higher at the start of each round.
In the later rounds you’ll begin to notice Brandon gets busted up pretty good and gets really weak and the rounds go by pretty quickly.
Dodging in Bustin’ Brandon
If you only use the Strike button you will never beat Brandon.
You will need to strategize on when to use the Dodge button to dodge or counter Brandon’s punches.
Dodging works similarly to striking in which one of four functions are selected at random, either your dodge fails and Brandon hits you, you dodge and gain some HP back, or you land a counter punch to Brandon.
Each time you succeed in dodging Brandon’s punches you gain some HP back (there are two different HP gains for this action), if you haven’t gained it all back already – meaning if you have full HP there is nothing more to gain.
What Happens if Your HP Gets Too Low?
If your HP gets too low and Brandon delivers his strongest punch and you reach zero HP, it’s game over for you.
Also, keep in mind that you can get knocked out by Brandon if your HP is too low and if your dodge fails, Brandon will deliver a blow that could cause you to lose the match.
Now, if your HP gets between 1 and 30 there is a ‘Tire’ system built-in that allows you an opportunity to regain some HP. When you tire-out you put your gloves up, in a blocking position, and you rest to gain some HP back.
Once you’ve gained enough HP back, you can strike back at your time of choosing.
I thought of the ‘Tiring System’ so that you don’t just get knocked out when your HP gets too low. This makes the game more interesting and you can strategize your next move to keep in the fight if you’ve come close to getting knocked out.
Keep in mind that there is a ‘Tired-out Counter’ and if you tire-out too many times you won’t have the ‘rest’ feature anymore and will be prone to knockout. You can view this counter in the “Game Status” screen in the game.
You can learn all about the mechanics and rules of this game when you begin to play Bustin’ Brandon.
Bustin’ Brandon Inspiration
Bustin’ Brandon wasn’t just born from the idea to apply a combat system for a Twine game, there was some inspiration that sparked the idea.
Part of that spark is due to the current events going on in the world in 2021/2022.
After playing and completing the game, the inspiration is revealed and becomes available to read about it in the ‘Settings’ at the main menu screen of Bustin’ Brandon (paid version).
Final Thought
I’m excited for the release of the Bustin’ Brandon game and I hope that you have as much fun playing it as I did creating it.
Keep an eye out for more to come by Art & Apps and check it out on the app stores.
I hope to create more apps and games for your enjoyment.
Enjoy!
